2301 Sannai, Nikko, Tochigi 321-1431, Japan
Dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of Japan’s most famous shōguns, Nikkō Tōshō-gū is listed among the most important places in the country. This Shinto shrine features a range of incredible structures, including the towering gate Yōmeimon. Its main pagoda stands five storeys; each intricately-carved level represents an element – earth, water, fire, wind and heaven. Its most significant area is the final resting place of Ieyasu. An urn containing his ashes is accessible via long flights of stone steps lined with sugi (cedar) trees, with visitors having to pass beneath an ancient torii gate.
